Chapter 21

Carino wasn’t sure how she was going to make a relationship with Ramon work, but after they’d stayed up late talking on the phone, she knew she had to give it a shot. He was just too perfect for her to pass up. They’d talked about nothing, but somehow it had changed everything. Instead of being distracted, for once, by his sultry charisma, Carino was getting to know his squishy insides. Which, of course, were turning out to be just as amazing as the rest of him.

They’d exchanged their likes and dislikes—from favorite books to what types of food their moms used to force them to eat to how many times they’d watched the movie Scarface. Which it turns out she’d seen more than he had.

Best. Movie. Ever.

When he’d invited her to stay this morning, it physically hurt to say no. Now that she’d been in his room, it didn’t seem as scary as it had the prior evening. But even though she’d managed to momentarily suppress the memories of everything that had transpired last night, she knew she’d made the right decision by going home, and she knew it was also the right decision to get her butt to work, no matter how badly she wanted to stay.

Carino knew this thing they had between them had the potential to be all-consuming, considering the short amount of time she’d known Ramon and how deep her feelings already were for him. She hadn’t even begun to think through all the implications. He didn’t live in the same country, for crying out loud! Not to mention the type of work he did and the person he worked for. So far, the only person at the Bureau that knew about their burgeoning relationship was Nathan, and she hoped his desire for self-preservation would keep him from mentioning Ramon to the director. If he did, he’d have to fess up that he’d broken protocol by contacting her … again.

Abby wasn’t at her desk when Carino got to the office, which was a welcome relief. She knew Abby was poised to conduct the Grand Inquisition about her date with Ramon and she just wasn’t ready to let anyone else into her happy bubble.

No sooner had she stepped foot in her office did her cell phone vibrate in her pocket. She furiously dug for it, silently willing it to be Ramon. Her stomach flip-flopped when she saw who was calling. It was the director. And he never called.

She composed herself as best as she could and pushed her door closed to protect against prying ears. “Hello, Carino speaking.”

“We need to talk.” His voice was nearly a growl.

“Y-yes, sir. Would you like me to come in?”

“No. I’m not going to waste any more time than necessary on this.”

Carino gulped down the bile that was suddenly rising in her throat as she finally arrived at her office. “Okay, sir, I definitely don’t want to waste your time.”
